My first stop in Thailand was an island off the eastern coast called Koh Samui. The flight from Hanoi, Vietnam to Koh Samui was about a 5 hour trip, with a layover in Bangkok. I was relieved that the second leg of the flight was delayed because it took me about an hour to get from one gate to another in the Bangkok airport. I was unaware that this is one of the biggest and busiest airports in Asia. Unlike the states, where there is a surcharge for everything, Bangkok Airways had a lounge for any and all passengers. I was happy to finally get some decent wifi and eat what was probably $100 worth of their free food!
Since I got into Koh Samui around 10pm it was too late to catch a ferry over to Koh Pha Ngan that night. I spent one night at a resort near the pier in Koh Samui then caught the ferry over the next morning.
For those who aren’t familiar with the full moon party, it is an all night party on Haad Rin Beach that takes place each and every time there is a full moon. It has turned into one of the biggest tourist attractions in Southeast Asia and seems to be on everone’s itinerary when coming out this way. The parties can attract up to 30,000 people on the beach and the bars and beach stands stay open til sunrise. As you can imagine a party of this size can lead to some ridiculous behavior and I was very happy to keep my distance from some of the sketchy crowds. With that being said, it was definitely a great experience and I’m glad I can knock that off the bucket list.
After about 21 days of nonstop sightseeing, pub crawls and sleeper trains, it was necessary for a three day relaxation trip. A small group of guys and girls from England, California and Colorado joined me at Haad Yao Bayview Resort. This resort is a bit more upscale versus the hostels that we were used to staying in and it has its own private pool and beach that we took full advantage of. The past three days were spent laying by the pool, going to bed at a reasonable hour and even treating ourselves to a Thai massage on the beach.
